s+EnvironmentalStats®

Client Testimonials

"EnvironmentalStats for S-PLUS by itself is a remarkable product. Tailored as it is to EPA’s DQO/DQA processes it provides environmental scientists and statisticians with all the tools that either could want for designing and analyzing environmental monitoring and assessment studies. Invaluable tools for study design include easy to use GUI-based prospective power analysis functions and graphical functions for producing performance goal diagrams. For basic analyses such as goodness of fit testing, comparison of sample estimates to regulatory criterion values, confidence interval and quantile estimation, trend analyses, calibration and detection limit problems, and much more, EnvironmentalStats GUI makes analysis a pleasant trip of discovery for even the most “statophobic” scientist. For statisticians and more quantitative environmental scientists, advanced analysis tools including GUI-based functions for producing PDF and CDF plots and data generation data from 37 theoretical distributions, univariate and multivariate Monte Carlo simulation functions and tolerance interval estimation functions are available. But the perhaps the most unique feature of the software is that it has a companion text, “Environmental Statistics with S-PLUS” by Steven Millard and N.K. Neerchal that provides an exhaustive treatment of the statistical sampling and analysis issues that confront applied environmental statisticians and scientists. Drs. Millard and Neerchal have a rare talent for explaining and illustrating even the most difficult statistical procedures and principles in language that is clear and free of jargon. However, the most unique feature of the software and the text is that they are seamlessly interwoven, each complimenting the other. The software illustrates the book and the book places the software in the context of the underlying environmental research questions. This is unprecedented. Together the software and the book clarify the DQO and DQA process to such an extent that it is hard for me to imagine applying these principles to my own work or teaching them to applied scientists without the two. I suspect that the book and the software will contribute more to the implementation of EPA’s DQA/DQO processes than all of the guidance documents yet written."Michael Riggs, Ph.D.

"I've found EnvironmentalStats to be a great resource for producing the results my clients are looking for. The manual itself is a great read and should be recommended to all those involved with the analysis of environmental data."
Robin Regnier, Central Limit Statistical Consulting

"... it’s an excellent piece of work. I’m especially fond of ... the User’s Manual and the Help module.... It’s really good enough as material for teaching an applied course in environmental statistics."

"Congratulations! I finally had a chance to sit down and read the manual. It is terrific, and exactly what we -- us statistical hydrologists -- have been needing all these years. I am very impressed."

"The goodness of fit plot summary is great (what a time saver)....It is so refreshing to have a statistics software manual that uses datasets with the kind of characteristics we run into."

"[What do I like about EnvironmentalStats for S-PLUS?] Everything! EnvironmentalStats is a great tool in my every day work. I am new to the environmental field and EnvironmentalStats has been a great tool to have for learning current problems and the latest methods applied to those problems. I really feel comfortable using EnvironmentalStats because it provides complete references and I feel that I am not using a black box!"

"As a long-time user of S-PLUS, I am often able to program my own functions. But I never have the time or programming expertise to make the functions yield decent output or allow flexible options. EnvironmentalStats contains the functions I need to do my work, without wasting my client’s money on programming. The output for some of the regular S-PLUS functions is re-formatted so it can be easily inserted into reports. Also, the help files give sound theoretical background on statistical methods, with resources listed for more information."
Alice Shelly, TerraStat Consulting Group

"... a robust tool which gives documented access to commonly-required statistical methods for environmental problems. Millard knowledgeably reviewed the literature and developed a facile tool which is tied to a powerful statistical engine giving access to alternative methods and automated processes. What more could you want without developing it yourself?"
Alta Turner, CH2M Hill

"I particularly like your extensive help files and reference list; the functions I’ve used the most in the recent past have been the alternative parameterizations of lognormal distribution (and associated confidence bounds...), the function to calculate power; I like the added distributional options (like the truncated versions, and mixtures of normals and lognormals)...."
